I can only think of two possibilities.
    1. I was included in a group chat with this individual, but I didn’t add their number to my contacts. The group chat had like only 4 messages total. Maybe they added me to their contacts?
    2. I have clicked on some of their social media accounts, but I haven’t friended/followed them in any.

It uses gps to detect your position, your friend’s snapchat does the same for him, eventually when you are close enough physically for multiple times, Snapchat interprets that you are seeing each other quite often thus you both might know each other so maybe you’re friends and/or goes to the same places repetitively/ have the same interests/ etc..
You might find it impressive or innovative but the truth behind that is a big privacy concern which almost everyone don’t give a F about it. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
