    Hi all,

I'm a web developer with 15 years experience, but only just starting to delve into deep SEO. I've always done the basics – meta tags, JSON, search consoles etc.

My current client is an AirBnB style coastal holidays type website. People can book short term rentals at cottages in a specific area.

I've got budget from the client, but have no idea what to do.. Should I spent it on writing good quality blog content? Should I pay for backlinks?

The SEO tech side of the website is great – but the SEO world is confusing for me!

    Would appreciate any advise!

Given the fact that the technical side of the website is already solid, focusing on content and backlinks is a smart move.

The easy answer would be that you need to focus on both.

However, to start, I’d recommend investing in quality backlinks within your client’s niche. Backlinks from reputable sites signal to search engines that your site is a trustworthy source of information. This can improve the site’s domain authority and, consequently, its search engine rankings.

Learn about backlinks before buying them. Trust me. Spend a few days or weeks (or hours) learning how to get them and why you need them. Begin here:

Grumpy SEO Guy episode 21 (this will explain WHY you need authority)

Grumpy SEO Guy episode 37 and 39 (the difference between good and bad backlinks)

Grumpy SEO Guy episode 49 (how to get backlinks)

Then, if you want to understand how everything fits together, listen to Grumpy SEO Guy episode 51, which discusses the 4 main things needed.

Cannot say too much about backlinks but for onpage SEO you can start from the official google documentation. SEOMoz have a good beginner guide if I remember well. Otherwise, you could rely on a consultant for the first times. Basics: good navigation and site architecture, organize the pages following a hierarchy, invest on some good content to drive traffic to landing pages that create the conversions.

Think about content you can also distribute as digital PR to LOCAL news sources. This would give you a big all round boost. Contact a local PR agency for a quality email list. Or scrape a local media list, that could work too.
