Running out of ideas on how to keep my business afloat since PMax

Posted by nerinos on November 23, 2022 at 9:28 pm

I have a small Shopify store that was doing pretty well on smart shopping with a cost/conv of $6, but since performance max, my sales have plummeted and my cost/conv is at $120 over 2 months (and some of my sales are as small as $10). My optimization score is 100%, so I am at a loss. I tried creating another PMax campaign with no assets, and that seemed to help for a little while, but that has bottomed out as well. I created a regular shopping campaign last week and that has gotten 0 conversions as well. I know people are having mixed results with PMax, but I am not going to be able to stay in business much longer if I cant start getting sales. Is there anything else I can do at this point? Or do I just have to hope Google improves how PMax works?

Optimization score does not mean anything.

If you have spent enough on both campaigns. Maybe the issue is your shopping feed? Has more competition entered the market for Black Friday? Do people just not buy what you sell as much this time of year? If things are not working then you need to take action and make a change or two in your ad account. Waiting around is not going to change the course you are on.

The challenge is that with smart anything on Google Ads, you have released control to Google.

I own an ad agency and we manage millions per month in ad spend. PMAX sucks. It takes a while and a budget to get them to perform—if they ever do.

PMAX was not built to max sales for you. It was built to activate the portion of ad inventory that Google was not selling, like display, because their display ads usually suck.

Get Data Feed Watch. Use their team to help you set up a standard shopping campaign. Use their tool to put your target keywords in your titles and descriptions. Try to start shifting budget away from PMAX and eventually turn them off. Do it yourself, with the DFW team there to answer hard questions, and try to take ownership of your ads.

    This is the way.

    God speed.
