GuestNovember 18, 2022 at 10:18 pmI’m learning to wait out the media drama these past few years. But maybe I have some controversial thoughts on the matter:
I don’t think losing those employees will really hurt them that bad. I think it will just open up thousands of jobs from people that are more in line with Musk’s views and direction for Twitter.

GuestNovember 19, 2022 at 12:20 amIf Twitter goes bust, won’t someone be able to buy it for $1 and bring it back to us?

GuestNovember 19, 2022 at 12:48 amElon took a company that was already ailing and put it on life support – for no other reason than to satisfy his own ego. And his fans still think he’s a genius. ?♂️

GuestNovember 19, 2022 at 2:04 amIt was ideologically just an echo chamber for one political class. I don’t like Elon but I can see some merit in wanting to even the playing field. Maybe the way of social media needs a shake up and some new ideas?

GuestNovember 19, 2022 at 2:12 amSilly of me to think a thread about twitter could possibly survive without turning political. Whoopsie! Also, it’s never not hilarious how Elon’s fans swung from earth saving, well-off liberals to the exact opposite. What a time to be alive!

GuestNovember 19, 2022 at 3:08 amSome of the biggest overhead for a company is brick & mortar locations and employees. Might be the biggest for digital based companies. The other big cost is data servers which may be bigger than the other two. I’m not 100% on that.
Server costs can’t really be touched because it’s based on users and it’s really the backbone of the company.
Many other tech companies were preparing or have already done lay offs. It’s also speculated that social media companies were bloated with employees.
The pandemic also showed us that many employees in office and tech positions can work from home rendering office spaces useless.
It’s likely that these steps were coming any way.
Ad Revenue is going to need to be necessary for Twitter to be succesful. I think most agencies will be where the people are and where they can safely place thier brands. They’ll come back if there is money to be made.
I think a bunch of Twitter’s debt is from banks so it really comes down to how long will they give Musk a chance to give it a try before calling for their money. Since Musk has successfully created businesses I think it’ll be around for a while. Barring a mass exodus event. Currently, Twitter is everywhere in the media and people are using it still.

GuestNovember 19, 2022 at 4:06 amSorry if this is a stupid question, but I’m at a loss. I see many people on Twitter stating that they will go to mastedon and I don’t understand why they won’t try reddit? I find more valuable info here than Twitter. What am I missing? Thank you.

GuestNovember 19, 2022 at 4:30 amDo others assume his goal from the start was to end the company? He has the wealth to eat a 44 billion dollar loss. He’s smart enough to know his demands would result in many of not most of the remaining 50% of staff would resigning. And this may be exactly what he wants, staff voluntarily leaving.
Could his plan simply be to dismantle Twitter so that one or more companies he’s invested in could fill the void?
If he bought Twitter and then said he’s shutting it down maybe that would cause huge legal issues. But if he just puts in a big show of executive ineptitude and bankrupts the company he avoids certain issues.

GuestNovember 19, 2022 at 4:46 amNot sure whether Elon is using bankruptcy to restructure the debt that he piled on to acquire it. Bankruptcy court is the only means to rewrite contracts. Either that or he is pushing it to insolvency so that he could buy it back through the bankruptcy court – free and clear of debt, FTC agreements, etc. I just do not see him sustaining the platform as an existing business when he has $1 billion of annual debt payments. The platform has never really made money and his high profile gutting pretty much guarantees that it never will.

GuestNovember 19, 2022 at 7:27 amEngineer here. Assuming the platform is mostly stable, it should be able to just run in its current state for a long time. They won’t be able to build many new features, and even just working on the code base at all will be challenging because all of the historical knowledge is gone. They have to be over there praying right now that there’s no major outages. They can roll back buggy code and achieve some level of stability with a skeleton crew, but that’s probably it.
Then there’s content moderation. There are laws that social media companies have to follow when it comes to content moderation. They can’t run that on a skeleton crew. I’m not 100% sure, but it is likely a 3rd party company that handles most of Twitters content moderation? I know that’s what Meta does at least. So they might be fine.
Advertiser relationship is probably just gone right now. That’s ok for a bit while Elon can bank roll it. And a good amount is probably automated for smaller advertisers. But big advertiser deals are probably screwed.
