Recently Lost My SEO Job Due to this global crisis, what certifications would make me more valuable?
Posted by seohelper on April 10, 2020 at 4:01 pmI recently lost my job as an SEO for a company, as I apply to more jobs, I was wondering if there are any certifications that would make me more valuable/desirable. I’ve recently been certified for Google Analytics, but wasn’t sure if there are any other ones out there. Is an HTML certification worth it? Welcoming any recommendations.

GuestApril 10, 2020 at 4:05 pmHonestly, I’m sorry to hear that, but it’s tough right now for a lot of people. My recommendation is to focus on first building a portfolio website if you don’t already have one, then check out the SEMRUSH SEO certification.
Best of luck, use this time to work on your site.

GuestApril 10, 2020 at 4:45 pmCan you write content? Start an affiliate site. You’ll be a very attractive candidate if you turn up to an interview and tell them you have your own website that makes X. It shows you have a LOT of desirable skills/traits that owners would want in an employee.
You have time so invest it wisely man!
I have a few affiliate sites that make me a decent amount of cash, DM if you want some tips.

GuestApril 10, 2020 at 5:01 pmMoz Academy is free right now and one of the best SEO resources(IMO). Not sure if they have certifications but they are very well respected in the SEO community. Also try SEMRush Academy they give out certifications like the Google Analytics course.

GuestApril 10, 2020 at 5:07 pmSorry to hear. Mirroring one of the other comments here. Most valuable thing is experience, not certifications.
Pick a niche, start a website (WordPress.org is cheap + works well), write content (or outsource the writing), grow traffic. Show results when applying to jobs.

GuestApril 10, 2020 at 5:08 pmSQL, Excel, tableau and Python, anything to do with data analysis. These are some of the fastest growing in demand marketing skills and will set you out amongst the rest.
You can find some really cheap or free courses to get started (I’m learning via Udemy).

GuestApril 10, 2020 at 5:13 pmIf you’re looking to get hired by a company and not run your own business I would suggest finding courses that help you understand the user and buyer journey, communicate with stakeholders (data presentation, Studio, Tableau, etc.) and understand the sales funnel. This can help you find your strengths and weaknesses and then you can work on those skills to make yourself more marketable to employers. By understanding the sales funnel you’ll have a good idea of what an employer might need/want and can market to that employer how you can help. Loads of business owners still don’t fully understand how much a good digital presence can do for them.

GuestApril 10, 2020 at 5:34 pmSEMrush, BlueArray, and Moz certifications are the most recognised. They might be for free now because of the pandemic. Keep strong buddy!

GuestApril 10, 2020 at 6:01 pmYou should use this time by building your own site marketing your own services to others. I was in a similar situation 3 years ago, so I took the time to build a site (since i knew it would take months to rank) and now I’ve been my own boss for 3 years. You got this!

GuestApril 10, 2020 at 6:01 pmWhat kind of SEO did you do? The field’s broad.
Also I don’t think companies look at certifications more than they do actual, practical efficiency. I don’t know if there are certifications worth getting really. Saying you’ve worked with HTML for 10 years and know it like the back of your hand’s better (and probably a bigger assurance) than an HTML certification in my view
But I’ve yet to start hire people so perhaps my advice’s not the best

GuestApril 10, 2020 at 7:31 pm100% agree with starting and ranking some of your own sites. Pick a few niches in case one thing doesn’t work out. If you can’t build out the site yourself you can find someone on Fiverr for cheap to get started.

GuestApril 10, 2020 at 7:52 pmyou just need to hold tight you’ll get a job sooner or later, either when the market opens again or a different company that is selling stuff that people still want right now.
SEO qualifications mean jack, it’s all about experience, what sort of companies you’ve worked for before and what sort of accounts you’ve had.
I presume you’re from the US, I can’t believe how badly your country is dealing with this, USA is a much wealtheir country than the UK and the UK government basically decided to pay 80% of everyone’s wages. businesses decide to keep you on, and pay you, and the government pays 80% of the salary in a rebate system.
The idea being that it allows us to continue as normal after covid is over. It seems that the US has left businesses to do whatever they want, either layoff or pay from the reserves and businesses, including big businesess have decide to lay everyone off.
There will be big repurcussions from this. People going backrupt, businesses without staff to continue their business activities.
It’s amazing that the US with it’s massive defence, with bases in 95% of the worlds countries can’t afford to deal with natural disasters at home.

GuestApril 10, 2020 at 8:02 pmEvery skill you have makes you more and more attractive. Being able to edit HTML, work on WordPress just makes you invaluable. A lot of companies are afraid of the amount of extra costs an SEO agency can bring via web development work that they have to go through and, as SEO is often brought in AFTER a web development project (which frankly, is far too late) – they are probably sick of their web developers (that’s been my experience) – so being more independent makes your value proposition look better and it makes you agile – as you’re not bottle necked and the things you need to execute on don’t have to get cost sign-off and pre–approval. And *everyone* knows that when a web agency sees a Tech Requirements Spec from an SEO, its automatically increased by about 250% (kidding, relax. Although,…)

GuestApril 10, 2020 at 8:29 pmi think that hubspot and salesforce might be helpful, also any of the google academy stuff is good too, specifically their mobile marketing course.
I would also highly suggest branching out of SEO too I got my adwords cert when i was feeling that i was plateauing in my career and since then i have been able to use it to advance my career in more broad digital marketing manager roles which include SEO, SEM, and even Email.
Another good cert to get would be Facebook blueprint in my opinion. Its one of the more rigorous tests that you can’t really cheat on compared to Google and Hubspot stuff. These will all be paid but have good value career wise.
For email marketing, Pardot would be a good cert to get. Not free but would provide you with a lot of good skills.

GuestApril 10, 2020 at 9:41 pmSorry to hear about the recent news. My contingency plan should my company take the same route:
-Reach our to local service based businesses via handwritten notes and a link to my web portfolio
-Offer up a complimentary SEO swat analysis and defining where new opportunities might be (technical SEO and spotting missing tags, etc)
-Create a mass geo-specific target KW category based on any niches which seem to respond to my letters (create a separate “Services for HVAC” page for each city in my state)
-Offering complimentary photography for their company
-Providing a discounted monthly basis rate program for prospectives if they like the workHope this helps! Happy to connect and see if I can offer any other ideas. Just message me.
