PMAX paused as client hates the cringe auto-generated video ads

Posted by keeptheshoes on October 1, 2022 at 7:22 am

Sharing frustrations. This Client is in makeup ecommerce sector with £600/day budget.

Client “discovered” the PMax YouTube videos and were furious I had created unapproved video.

I explained (again) the nature of PMax. But the hidden metrics of PMax meant I couldn’t give them any conversion data attributed to YouTube ads.

So I’ve had to pause the campaigns and start from scratch with Standard Shopping & Search.

I hate the ongoing daily trawl of adding Negs to Standard Shopping. The keywords I’m paying for clicks on are so wildly inaccurate, I have a script in place but it’s not perfect.

Anyone else been forced to not use PMax? Feel like I’m taking a step back in time, but kinda grateful to have full control of bids again!

I feel performance max isn’t yet ready for production, but Google are trying to get it out as quickly as possible as it’s such a money maker.

Instead of giving you granular control over who you target, they’re now serving your ads to people and on websites you’d never target if you had a choice. I assume that was the plan, as they can now sell their garbage inventory to unwilling buyers.

    Can you/your-client create a video ?
Even a short videos of 20 secs that present the company. Or create a video slideshow with 5 top products

Pmax is a big part of e-commerce. It will help in creating roadmaps to scale the business.

Tell your client to create a video themselves instead. But I agree with you and with the comment above. Google wants to sell us its garbage inventory without us excluding anything.

You can use P-Max, just exclude the asset group and no video/display/discovery ads will run. It’ll be purely shopping and dynamic remarketing.

Those auto-gen videos suck. Anyway, it’s enough to create one video asset and the auto-gen vids disappear. You could basically just use a image, put it in a video format and upload it as a video.

I understand clients have CI guidelines, but pausing the PMax now and going back in time cost way more than creating an asset now.

Get an own video. It doesn’t have to be great, just better than that auto-created garbage. So it shouldn’t be difficult.

I feel you, I have a PMAX spending $4,000 a day for a client in the fashion space and while initially he wasn’t a fan of it, performance now proved him otherwise.

The issue with PMAX is that if you put too much budget into it, you are getting too dependent on it. I run PMAX alongside Shopping, Search and Display/Discovery (where applicable) and get fairly good results with it. Occasionally PMAX has quite some hiccups, but I’m learning to overcome those more and more.

Reach out to your Google rep they can disable auto generated videos on PMax for up to 6 months

    Nope.

Although, I do have to say that PMAX is not the only option in my Google Ads account.
Many times, it is an afterthought.

That said, you can create your own videos via the video builder tool inside Google Ads and then connect the URL to your PMAX campaign[s].

This will remove the autogenerated videos.

    Hope it helps

Clients should not care what you use if it’s working and moving the business forward. Had to tell a prospect this yesterday who said the exact same thing. If brands are going to hire an agency, let the agency do their job and they can focus on their business.

Unless the client is giving you video, you should not be using PMax as most are going to hate the video it auto makes. Brands can use the latest Android or iPhone to take a 10 second video to upload into PMax. We are finding some clients need a 30 day window to make that video but then we can run PMax in a way better state.

You would have been showing up for the same terms with PMax, you just couldn’t see the data.

Have you had a look at the video creation tool in the asset library?
You can use Google’s templates to set up the video to suit what you would want a lot better than the auto generated videos
It still needs ironing out a bit but better than the auto ones

In my opinion all of these automated things suck. I always prefer to just target everything with laser precision especially when the budget is small.
