PMax – exclude brand at campaign or account level?

Posted by ben_bgtDigital on July 25, 2024 at 8:09 am

I'm auditing an account with only PMAx, helping out a current client with their second business. I've never looked into PMax before.
None of the PMax campaigns have Brand negated at the campaign level. Is there a place it could be negated elsewhere in the account?

You can create a brand list and exclude it on your P-Max campaigns.

If you don’t want to advertise the brand at all you can add it at the account level as a negative keyword. But there are very good reasons to run branded so be thoughtful with this decision.

If they don’t have an excluded Brand list, then you can check the Account-level negative keyword list (which does apply to Pmax campaign) in the account settings.

You can [apply brand exclusions](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/14505308) to Performance Max or Search campaigns. Keep in mind that for Performance Max, brand exclusions apply to Search and Shopping inventory. It is worth checking if your PMax campaign is serving on the other inventory placements.

If you remove brand from PMax, will the PMax campaign still have enough conversions to run? If not, it may not make sense to remove it from the campaign. Might also make sense to test out standard shopping campaigns. Just running PMax in an ad account is usually leaving money on the table.

If you exclude brand queries then you will nuke your shopping results. Does your client understand that?
