It is true that the term “AI” has become quite popular and is often used as a marketing strategy in various industries. Many companies, eager to capitalize on the growing interest in artificial intelligence, tend to overuse or misrepresent the concept in their promotional materials.

In some cases, products or services may claim to have AI capabilities, but upon closer inspection, they may not actually utilize advanced AI techniques. This can lead to a sense of disappointment or skepticism when users realize that the advertised AI features are not as sophisticated as expected.

For example, you mentioned seeing advertisements for an “AI journalist” that promises to improve your brain. However, when you logged in, you only found a basic journaling app similar to Notepad on iPhone or Galaxy. This disconnect between the marketing claims and the actual functionality can be frustrating and make it seem like the AI label is used purely for marketing purposes.

It is important for consumers to remain critical and discerning when encountering products or services that tout AI capabilities. Understanding the specific features and limitations of AI technology can help avoid falling for misleading marketing tactics. While there are undoubtedly genuine AI advancements being made, it is necessary to separate the true innovations from mere marketing hype.

So throwing AI as a buzz word into marketing has been happening for awhile now, at least a decade, and has often been bullshit. I remember working with a start up using a simple algo and they wanted to claim AI. Funny enough though that within the last six months the claim has probably become more accurate, not less. Ping the OpenAI API for some trivial feature, boom, “we use AI”. What that actually means and how much it matters, that’s a different story.
