  • Old domains and site merges – how should I handle those?

Hiya, I started working for a fast growing company that acquired a lot of businesses in the past couple of years and wanted to ask how would you handle the website merges that have already happened? The websites have already been repointed to the main page. Ideally I'd 301 all relevant to the specific pages on the main page but I can see some have just been pointed to the homepage. We're talking about 30+ websites so it's a bit of work!

Majority of them are like the following example:

Websites that existed for many years but haven't got many backlinks (if any 10 spammy ones) and weren't getting much (if any) organic traffic. They're not getting any now since they are not indexed anymore (and repointed to the main page).

They also have a lot of registered names, e.g.

Example com, example co uk, example info, etc. but obviously only the one was used for the website, the rest would have been pointed to it.

So in this case would you keep a domain like that because it's relevant and old but only keep the com and let the co uk and info lapse or just get rid of the whole thing?

Really appreciate all the help I can get. It's a new territory to me!

Start by auditing all existing redirects and ensuring relevant pages from old domains 301-redirect to specific pages on the main site, rather than just the homepage. Prioritize give awayTLDs (e.g., .com or .co.uk) and let unnecessary ones expire and refuse any spammy links.
