I built a site for a guy while back (no SEO, just a basic landing page). He mostly gets clients through word-of-mouth, but yesterday he asked me if I could add content to his site and optimize it for SEO so he can bring in more customers.

I've never done SEO for a client – I build sites on the side, mostly for myself. I'm competent at ranking sites in medium sized local markets (I build rank & rent / local lead gen sites and choose my markets & niches carefully). But this guy does construction estimating, site takeoffs, and 3D models which are not a local service. I'm not super confident I can rank his site since I've never worked with non-local keywords/markets.

Should I take on the work? What would I even charge?

You’ll learn as you go, and likely risk to deliver a subpar job at the cost of your client’s money and your own reputation.

    Can you do it? Yes.

    Should you do it?

You’ve built your own sites and got them ranked, so why not do it for a client? It’s a new opportunity. Take it.

If you’re not confident in it and truly care about helping your client make more money, then refer him to someone you trust in that area and take a cut.
