Negative Keywords – Help Me Understand

Posted by Independent-Two-8286 on April 4, 2023 at 7:48 pm

Guys I wanted to ask some of you who are more experienced something (Specifically those who are still running campaigns after the latest google match type update).

I’m running ads for a local business and I’ve recently switched to broad keyword match types, but I’ve been getting clicks for irrelevant things (i only switched to broad because of latest update and how google is going the automated broad route, so i thought i would try and keep up with the times).

    My question is this:

If i added the broad negative keyword
“joe’s furnace repair”, does Google stop showing my ad to people searching “furnace repair” too?

    Thank you in advance.

Not so long as you check the “exact match” box

The basic rule: add negatives as broad for one-word keywords (free, download, tutorial, and similar irrelevant terms).

Add negatives as exact/phrase for keywords made from more than one word.

In your example, Google will exclude any expression with Joe’s, furnace or repair in it. So either make it phrase or exact.
