  • Need Help: Impressions plummeting from 8,000-10,000 last week

Posted by Ambitious_War1747 on August 16, 2024 at 11:50 am

My website has experienced a drastic decline in traffic, with impressions plummeting from 8,000-10,000 last week to a mere 30-50 impressions this week. This sudden and severe drop in traffic is a cause for concern, and it's essential to identify the root cause of this issue to take corrective measures.

How to fix this issue and if there is any penalty from Google, how to identity that one ?

Check Google Search Console for penalties or indexing issues and review recent changes to your site and adjust accordingly….

I would look at all pages and see which ones lost impressions, then look at the most popular queries [sort by number of impressions] for each page and the also at how the average position looks like for each query to see if you lost rankings for those queries.

It’s like super difficult for someone to help if all you offer is “my impressions lowered”.

Have you done any analysis to see if that drop in impressions is site wide or a specific number of pages?

The August core update just kicked in. Could that be a reason?

First, that is not a drop in traffic. Impressions are not visitors.

Second, the data is right there in front of you. Look at which search queries lost impressions and then start investigating from there. Were the terms seasonal? Did they drop in rankings?

Third, it’s highly unlikely you were penalized by Google.

I have a site that has grown a lot in the last 2 weeks. I imagine the core update was already in place before it was announced and your site has been affected.

Have you blocked Google’s bot or used any AI blocker so that Google doesn’t use the site to train its AI?

There is an article from yesterday on Bloomberg that says that if you block their AI from accessing your site, your site may die. The article is titled “Share data or Die”
