Need career advice (freelance → agency)

Posted by ok2sport on June 3, 2024 at 1:05 pm

Hey guys, it's probably silly, but I'd like to ask for advice here.

I'm currently a paid ads freelancer (Google Ads / MS Ads), with about ten small projects and a couple of large ones. I'm not fully satisfied with my income level, especially after looking at the yearly PPC salary report. The problem I'm facing is that getting another project or two won't change it drastically, not to mention that it's not a piece of cake for me to find rewarding projects. Perhaps I underestimate myself and don't feel enough confidence, thus don't try to get more serious projects, idk.

Apart from my Google Ads projects, I have a couple of clients I'm consulting/supporting with their GTM/GA4 tracking configs, and I do enjoy that part no less than Google ads management part.

So I'm looking for advice on how I can / should move on with my career:

    1. How would you evaluate the chances of finding a well-paid (75K+) remote full-time position in an agency/in-house for someone from Europe? I reckon only the US market can offer good wages.
    2. Will the fact of me being a freelancer complicate things and lower my chances of being hired?
    3. Is there a prospective career path for me to transition to in the analytics world, even if it would require lowering my salary expectations?

    Any thoughts are highly appreciated.

I am going the other way from analytics to PPC. The problem with analytics is that if you’re good, it’s generally a one time thing and too many people can do it ok. Tagging is actually quite easy and long term Google will just automate it all.

May I ask what you are charging these “small clients”? What are your results with them? Are they all in one specific industry / type of product?

I would dial in on one industry and start going after larger clients, or even smaller ones in the US. I would build yourself a personal brand website, start blogging about PPC, and have a portfolio page with some of the results you’ve generated.

This will give you A LOT MORE credibility to sell clients

Start pivoting to specialize in one industry over time and leverage your results to go after bigger and bigger clients. Look into white label – where someone sells your services for a premium and sends the work to you at a cheaper rate to finish it.

Eventually you should have built a small brand for yourself and I think you could push to the $200k a year range if successfully implemented, and marketing to the USA market.
