  • my social media job asking for videography

Posted by TipFearless on May 22, 2024 at 5:03 pm

i've been at my job for a year now and i run three business social media accounts under one main company. the work has primarily been taking iphone content and editing on capcut for content. my boss just spoke with me about getting camera equipment for taking more "videography like" content with different lenses, lighting, etc. i'm assuming they would want me to make similar videos for the other businesses as well. this feels like a completely different job to me and i feel like i should as for a raise, as i would be learning new equipment, editing software, color grading, etc. they originally wanted to hire a professional videographer, but it was out of their budget. i feel like they just want me to do it now but it "won't cost them anything". i don't know how to go about this or how much i should ask for a raise. can someone give me some advice on what to do?

You can ask for a raise or take this opportunity to learn while being paid and move to a different job

I would ask for examples of what they are thinking, then ask on videography subs how they think the videos were made. You can get away with alot in the edit alone, but pro videographers have lots of training, lots of experience. If it’s stuff you can achieve in the edit, that might be something you can learn. Going from no experience to full pre/prod/post video is a ridiculous thing to ask.

Sounds like they need to hire a videographer or contract a company/contractor to do videos that you post.

Running social media as one person is already so much work. Knowing videography is useful in order to work with someone who can produce content and you know how the production is going or even help yourself, but to be expected to produce all this content a professionally and manage the channels will be insane. It could be a great learning opportunity, but for them it will become an expected part of your role if you take it on.

Definitely hire a videographer. I’ve found videographers range in price there has to be someone out there that can fit their budget. If you want to learn go for it but charge them like other people are saying!

The workload for this task is indeed quite substantial. If I were in this situation, I would first communicate directly with my boss, explaining that the current workload exceeds my capacity to handle. Because if you don’t speak up, the workload in the future might just keep increasing.

If this is an area you’d like to move into, or a skill set you’d like to develop, roll with it. Its not that hard to learn and in 6 to 12 months ask for a raise, or move to another organisation that pays more for someone who can shoot and cut. The glass can be ‘half full’ here if you let it. It’s all part of the digital content skill set.
