My dog’s IG hit 40k followers with 17% engagement rate – is it worth trying to reach out for sponsors? Or will sponsors come to us?
Posted by Chibbayyyy on June 19, 2023 at 11:08 amI didn’t think brands look at accounts under 50k but people suggested otherwise ?
Influencing was not our goal when we made our IG, it was all just for fun and sharing happiness with peopleChibbayyyy replied 2 years ago 2 Members · 1 Reply -

GuestJune 19, 2023 at 12:00 pmI wouldn’t set your hopes too high for sponsors with only 40k followers.

GuestJune 19, 2023 at 1:25 pmAnyone who is telling you that you don’t have enough followers to get sponsorships does not actually work in the industry or understand how sponsorships work. You absolutely should be pitching brands, and you could have started doing that 30,000 followers ago.
If you’re account is in good shape, put together a rate sheet and start pitching aligned brands. The pet industry is huge on instagram.

GuestJune 19, 2023 at 2:14 pmI owned a pet brand that did a fair amount of influencer marketing. We only gave free product to influencers, never cash sponsorships. If we really liked the account, we would usually offer about $100-200 value of free stuff, plus offer some more free stuff they could use for a giveaway hosted on their channel(s).
We worked with accounts ranging from 3k (with great engagement or great content) to 1m+ followers. Or sweet spot was probably around 10-30k followers, so 40k followers in the pet industry is probably fine if you’re ok with sponsorships like what we would do.
The main reason for influencer marketing is exposure/sales of course, but we also heavily relied on influencer marketing for high quality UGC (user-generated content), so if you have amazing photos/videos, you don’t necessarily need a lot of followers to attract interest. I reached out to accounts with less than 5k followers all the time if they had great photos.
I would start reaching out to brands you’re interested in…it doesn’t hurt. Once you get a few sponsorships and have content featured on various brand accounts, other brands will likely notice and reach out to you themselves (monitoring competitors’ posts is the easiest way for brands to find new influencers). A lot of brands also have affiliate programs you can sign up for. I know you’re looking for sponsorships, but being an affiliate is an easy way to potentially get on a brands’ radar.
That said, we usually found our influencers because they were already customers of our product and they previously tagged us in a post wearing our stuff. So if you already have/use some dog products, it wouldn’t hurt to make a post and tag it with the brand…just don’t be super blatant about it. For example, if you like a certain brand of dog food, post a cute/great photo of your dog with the food somewhere in it…could even be in the background. It doesn’t have to be a cringey sales pitch. Tag the post and hope the brand takes notice.

GuestJune 19, 2023 at 2:27 pmHonestly, if they’re not reaching out to you, they don’t care to work with you.
If we’re honest, pet accounts with thousands of followers are a dime a dozen. My cat had hundreds of thousands of followers when he passed several years ago.

GuestJune 19, 2023 at 2:40 pmThis is the slow death of social media platforms imho. Platforms get overrun by this kind of BS. I’d say squeeze that lemon as fast as you can!

GuestJune 19, 2023 at 6:58 pmAuthenticity and Niche: Brands are often interested in partnering with accounts that align with their target audience and brand values. If your dog’s Instagram account has a specific niche or a dedicated fanbase, it can be appealing to brands looking to reach that audience.

GuestJune 19, 2023 at 8:18 pmIt’s time to put together a press kit that highlights what your page is about, important stats and why companies should collaborate (benefits)

GuestJune 20, 2023 at 10:43 amRight now brands are loving micro influencers, so the 50k following may be an advantage. As a social media manager, I would advise to build a community to help bolster that engagement rate, and maybe expand your reach by jumping on multiple platforms

GuestJune 21, 2023 at 7:41 amYou definitely need to reach out for partnerships! First of all, get yourself a media kit and start pitching to different brands/companies.
