Massive drop in backlinks on Google Search Console
Posted by bobsled4 on May 30, 2024 at 7:35 amHas anyone noticed a big drop in the Google Search Console links report?
When I checked this morning, I was surprised to see that my backlinks have dropped from 6-7,000 down to 750!
Also, internal links have dropped from 35-40,000 down to 5,500!
On Ahrefs, my backlink count is 11,000 and increasing.
With Google at present, there seem to be new surprises almost every day.

GuestMay 30, 2024 at 7:49 amYes. Some of My backlinks disappeared a few hours ago. The numbers aren’t the same as they were 24 hours ago.

GuestMay 30, 2024 at 8:26 amBeyond deranking thousands of sites, it seems like Google is dumping large parts of the web.
Not suprising as crawling costs money. It’s why related searches and PAA results are all the same. It’s cheaper to cache results than generate unique results on most searches.
By all accounts, Google is hardly a search engine anymore. Content dropped today, tomorrow you might not even be able to check your backlinks when Google drops Search Console.
That costs money, too.

GuestMay 30, 2024 at 8:46 amCame here to search for the same thing! Mine also dropped overnight, from thousands down to about 200, from only 9 websites.
They seem to have removed the “spammy” links, which is great. But in the process they also removed nearly all of my high-quality backlinks. For me, this includes major, high-ranking national/international websites, big news publications, and important, industry-recognized blogs where my work had been featured. I also had a good amount of backlinks from Pinterest; now I have 5.
I’m happy they removed the spam, but why remove the high-quality links? I’ve spent the past year working really hard to build those, and now they’re gone.

GuestMay 30, 2024 at 9:00 amIs it possible it’s now measuring the active ones only? I saw something being discussed along these lines in relation to the leaked documents.

GuestMay 30, 2024 at 10:14 amLooks like an issue on their end or there might be something they are testing or enforcing like refreshing links after a particular period which means they are now showing links gained last 6 months or 1 year (timeline they’ve set) and other links are now not recorded. Just an assumption.

GuestMay 30, 2024 at 10:43 amA sudden drop in backlinks could be due to various reasons, including changes in Google’s algorithm, website restructuring, or a decrease in the number of linking domains.

GuestMay 30, 2024 at 11:26 amSame question. I wonder if it will affect the ranging and search traffic too, or it’s just a display/reporting thing.
I even lost some internal links as well.
Good stuff I never bought links. I can’t even imagine paying thousands of dollars just to have links removed from GSC.
