I want to help animal rescue organizations with their social media. I know how social media works&I can do stuff. But only did it for my own accounts.

It sounds silly, but it’s not clear to me how I’d manage someone else’s account. I watched YT videos, most were offtopic bs). So you manage the account through a social media management system, right ?(not just asking for their log in I guess) So I should get familiar with what?

What exactly should I know/do (apart from the posts themselves)?

    I want to know/learn everything before emailing&applying@

I really don’t wanna mess this up, I genuinely just want to help! Thanks so much to everyone who’ll share the steps&good advice!

With all due respect OP, I don’t think you’re stuck on any particular “step,” but are too fresh in this space to really know how to begin. If you don’t know how to manage someone else’s account, you really need to learn all of the nuances of social media management before applying.

This really isn’t as easy as you might suspect as there are a lot of considerations that go into managing both large and small accounts. As someone who has managed social for numerous Fortune 100 companies and startups, there are huge differences and an equal number of similarities.

You aren’t going to learn how to do this from 10-15 hours of YouTube watching. There are certifications you can earn from Blueprint, Hubspot, etc. that would be a great place to start. The tool itself that you would do the actual management is really irrelevant, that’s just a tool to utilize, it’s what you do with the tool that you really need to learn first. You can’t possibly know “everything” before applying. I’ve been doing this for 10 years and I learn new things daily.

I’m sorry to burst any bubble you might have had as I want to encourage you to take any next steps in looking for a great opportunity, but I also think you need to consider the realities of the situation as well.

There are several different ways to manage social accounts on behalf of others.

The simplest way would be to, yes, get their login info and just sign in. If you or the company have security concerns, using a password manager with a share function is the next step up.

Also, the Social Media Management Platform route… that’s a whole other massive topic, but you’d probably want a more entry-level product and at some point in the set-up process you’d still need the company to provide you login info in some form in order to establish the connection. There are probably a few free options or plans out there to try out, but if you are looking for an all-in-one platform that can schedule, publish and report, this will cost money.

This is all, quite frankly, the easy part. Whether you’re part of an in-house social team or you’re freelancing, the key is communication between stakeholders. You should set up shared documents like content development trackers or social media calendars, if they don’t exist yet. This way, there’s a clear understanding of how much social content is being developed and when it’ll be live in-market. You should also establish a content library; likely a shared folder of some sort where the company can drop assets/videos/photos for you to use in your social posts.
