  • Just Notice Website Started to Rank (No. 23), But of Course Bought New/Better Domain Name

I just bought a new domain name that is more relevant to the service I provide, and of course the exact day that I buy it my website finally ranks on Google. Nothing special, but got to number 23 spot.

My question is, has anyone set up a new domain name and redirected the new back to the old? If so, did it help ranking at all? Should I just keep using the nonsensical domain name that I have now? or maybe it can help to redirect from the new, more relevant/service oriented domain name, back to my old one?

Grumpy SEO guy, please to chime in. I know that for it fact it does help somewhat to have the service in the domain name, at least a little.

    Why redirect new to old?

Domains essentially have no impact on ranking, but it is best to have them short, relevant and recognisable for humans (not Google) – domain equity and backlinks is where the domain starts to build traction

I would just change your domain, redirect permanently to your new domain, and just ensure you let Google know of your domain change in your Google search console property

Redirect old to new, 301 it, and update GSC. You’ll be fine.
