    Is this true?

Posted by IllustriousLibrary8 on May 31, 2024 at 9:01 am

Someone helped me set up a PMAX campaign, based on a normal search campaign I was already running.

He said I should keep the normal search campaign running, or otherwise the performance of the PMAX campaign would suffer.

    Is this true?

Any change actually effects PMAX performance. How is your performance, if its doing great….dont touch it.

Yes, this is true. P-Max uses data from the search campaign to help it determine what search queries to target. Sometimes Google even calls P-Max a search campaign companion.

That said, Google recently introduced P-Max keywords (max 25 broad match) as part of asset group targeting options. This is still in Beta. It could be that at some point Google announces that it’s no longer necessary to run search campaigns alongside P-Max.

There are other benefits to running search as well such as getting valuable query data and a deeper understanding of what’s driving performance.

Most people still run [search campaigns](https://www.takesomerisk.com/tag/search-campaigns/) and standard shopping campaigns along with PMax. You rarely want just PMax running in an ad account. If things are working then keep both campaigns running for now.

Yes, it is recommended to have a search counterpart to a pmax – of course depending on performance.
