As long as needed to satisfy the search intent.

Google uses it to judge useful content and a single keyword or a selection of keywords would probably be downvoted. But without specific official guidance most people can only guess.

Sorry, but you’re wasting your time & brainpower if this is what you’re thinking about and spending time on.

If you’re trying to tune for keyword density, take your first image on the page and in the “img src=“ HTML name it your keyword. You can also make the URL of the image (if in WordPress) your keyword as well.

I’d suggest doing this with the very first image on the page and don’t do this for this same keyword with any other images on the page.

No juice to be had from keywords in alt tags, they’re purely for accessibility for people with different needs, just give a short, very short, description of the image and you’ll be good to go

Keyword stuffing is when you type the same word over and over, not the length.

Not keyword stuffing: “This is a picture of a flower growing in the forest under the sun”

Keyword stuffing: “flower flower flower flower.”

Alt text is for accessibility. Make sure you fill it in with an accurate description of what the image portrays. If there’s text on the image, be sure to include that. If it’s a business logo all you need to do is put “[business name] logo”.

Focus on accessibility. Alt tags really aren’t the hack that some SEOs act like they are.
