Is PPC is a toxic industry??

Posted by Honeyruffle on May 10, 2024 at 3:51 am

Either it is my own personal unlucky experience but I am starting to think performance marketing is very toxic environment in general.

Having worked client side for big fintech corporation, experience has been somewhat negative. Some of the experiences

High pressure environment, results are expected literally overnight
Resistance to collaborate across different departments.
Inaccurate reporting fueling the fire – as a result a lot of reporting, analyzing is conducted manually which is time consuming.
The organization is either laying off media buyers or they are leaving and not getting replaced, spend is growing but hands PPC specialist decreasing and organization refuses to make more hires. Resulting in highly overloaded workload.
1 designer provided to provide creatives for multiple channels, languages for campaigns spend of $2M + per month

How normal is it to have 1 senior level media buyer managing monthly budgets of 2M per month across multiple channels and locstions?

When concerns are raised about workload and resources, senior management almost gaslights and makes you believe that the problem is you and your skills rather a resource concern.

    What do you guys think?

    > fintech

    There’s your problem, not PPC.

Budget doesn’t mean much. I worked on a fintech company that spent half that amount every month on like 4 search campaigns.

But it does sound like your work environment is unhealthy.

I would look for another job in your off time.

Can we name an industry that isn’t “toxic”? Just seems like a current buzzword to be honest.

A bunch of people with nothing in common doing stuff they don’t really care about in exchange for money… It’s universal

Unless the industry literally incites ‘toxic’ behaviour I don’t know if we can call an entire industry toxic?

People create toxic environments. Starts from the top and works it’s way down the ladder.

We are in the space of quantitative outcomes. So have to be result driven.

I feel the place you’re at is about culture mainly, the leadership team or your manager need to align to better proceses and cross team collab.

The gaslighting culture is messed up. i agree.

You have alot of skillset by the sound of things. Jump ship.

The thing about PPC versus other areas in marketing, at least when it comes to agencies in my experience, is that PPC is under the gun. The client is already spending a retainer fee plus actual ad spend and it’s actual money on the line. So when business is down, it’s PPC’s fault. When something is mismanaged, it’s PPCs fault. It’s always on PPC. When something is going well? The client gets praise. It’s just how it goes. Which, in turn makes working in PPC sometimes feel like you’re constantly getting beat with a hammer which over time will wear you down.

Any company can be awful to work at. You could take this FinTech company and replace it with SaaS and the situation would not be any different if everything else stayed the same,… minus the type of product/service you sell. At your budget level, a team of 2 – 3 would make sense. That way there is cover for when someone is away on vacation.

Have you had this experience at other firms?

In my experience, some difficulties are from a specific workplace and some are my own pattern. I ask myself, if I am taking actions that create good boundaries with others. Do I advocate for my own best interests.

I share this as I have seen good PPC friends get mistreated again and again by others, often shying away from standing up for themselves.

I’d say this issue is linked to Fintech rather than PPC…

Like any industry, there are toxic companies and there are wonderful companies to work for. Not unique to PPC.

Agencies are, yes. Let’s underpay and overwork a bunch of 20-somethings until they burn out or leave, and then rinse and repeat. I know, let’s have more meetings.

Previously, I worked as an employee in the investment industry until I advanced to the level of CIO/CEO. At that time, I barely had enough time for eating and sleeping. Are there any industries that are truly non-toxic?

The resistance collaborate across departments is relatable. Many companies don’t understand how important the website and user experience are to supporting ads I’ve certainly been in settings where IT makes it very difficult to get changes passed through.

Additionally, the expectation that results will be instant is also one that resonates. I’ve noticed there’s an expectation that an increase in budgets will immediately increase conversions. Each time I need to explain how complicated it is.
