  • Is MeWe’s transition to decentralization a good thing?

MeWe social media is transitioning its accounts to being decentralized and owned by the account holder. It uses the blockchain to give accounts holders more agency and ownership of their data. It essentially allows users to create a decentralized account that can then interact with MeWe , but could also interact with other services using the same account. I am unsure if this is actually a good thing or not, however. I would love to hear others pros and cons to this.

A lot of socials are quietly pursuing decentralization as the next frontier. We’re seeing major names like Threads, WordPress, and Tumblr play with fediverse integration, as well as rising platforms like Mastodon.

I don’t know much about MeWe other than its ties to Hong Kong and January 6th, but there’s clearly high demand for decentralized social options in the age of big tech surveillance. You can apply the same idea to micro-community social platforms like Discord (and to a lesser extent, Reddit).

I definitely think it’s a positive move in terms of privacy, but moving into a less centralized age of social media will likely have both positive and negative consequences.
