Is Instagram slowly dying? Are regular users out there (excluding content creators) losing interest?
I’m 31, so grew up using Instagram when it first released. Back then it was more or less a place for adding filters to pictures.
I enjoyed using it in the past and being the stereotypical Millennial, I documented holidays, food and travel shots etc. Admittedly, creating this false reality that I was living the good life all the time, which we all know is rubbish.
My usage is far less these days and like many of my friends, have little desire to post anything at all. However, I have kept the account for now, to keep in touch with distant friends /acquaintances.
I Know there is an algorithm at play and you get tracked via cookies etc but I find the overall content it spits out at me just mind numbing.
Regardless of the settings I apply, the homepage has become a relentless barrage from content creators. TikTok style videos, cringey wannabe comedians, teen models showing off their ass or endless ads for crappy products.
It’s essentially become a platform for people to sell you a product, a service or themselves. The “social” part of Instagram and arguably social media in general seems to be disappearing.
I could be completely wrong of course but interested to see what others think.
Maybe I’m just outgrowing it and now out of touch.
As a side note, I’m aware there are many good content creators out there and those that run successful businesses on the Platform. This question isn’t in any way attacking those Individuals, I’m just trying to get a broader perspective of opinions from the average user and their perceived experience.
Will be interesting to see where the leading apps end up in the next few years, particularly with the recent shake-ups happening at the likes of Twitter.
