Started in CS, moved through roles to eventually lead social. Degree isn’t necessary, it helps for sure.

Ask small businesses to run their accounts, use small amounts of paid, record your results and case studies to showcase potential employers. I do this still as a side hustle, helps with the larger accounts!

    Best of luck!

Agency owner here – I couldn’t care less what your degree is in. I want to see you’ve committed to some sort of creative projects, have critical thinking skills, and are good with clients. Either job experience or projects in school show me that. Even a resume that takes some creative liberties would at least catch my attention for an interview.

A basic understanding of the three main social media platforms is absolutely necessary so we can have a discussion and training is easier. I’m looking for someone who can take direction and run with it without being micromanaged because I don’t have the time or interest to do that. Someone who plays well with others and is self motivated is mandatory because it’s 99% remote work.

Basic knowledge of software like Canva, Notion, slack, CapCut, Google Drive, etc. is nice, but if you can prove you’re a quick learner that’s negotiable.

Feel free to ask any other questions you like!

No, but professional knowledge is helpful.

I worked myself up through management in a company. Had some professional experience and a but a different degree and side stepped into the position

If you’re going to waste money on a degree that doesn’t give you experience, get a certification from a place like like Miami Ad School.

The program will give you social media experiences with major brands and agencies.

I did a graphic design BA and I’ve managed social media in the past for a small business. I learnt a lot, failed and succeeded! Now I do web design. Haha.

I don’t think it matters what degree you’ve done or even having one at all. I think what matters is showing your creative and problem solving abilities in your portfolio/CV!

Depends heavily which country you’re talking about. I feel like here in western europe, most companies would not care for degrees, more practical experience/ software knowledge.

Then again, if you’re applying for a SMM job in a bank or big consulting firm, it might look different

I’m currently working as a Social Media Manager. Indeed, I’m doing Master’s in Marketing and Business Communication, but that wasn’t a requirement for the current company I’m working with.

Most people want you to be proactive, learn new things, pay great attention to details and be passionate about your work. There are however companies that still believe you need a degree in the field to work in marketing, but if you ask me, it’s rather useless. I’ve learnt more from YouTube and Udemy in 6months than from Uni in 1 1/2 years of studying. ?

Of course, each person’s path is different, but I’d rather pay for online courses than University if I would to do it all over again + books about marketing for the theoretical part

If you allow me to give a personal piece of advice, I’d tell everyone to not be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes. As long as you correct yourself and learn from your mistakes, it will be okay. Best of luck ?

In house social and digital director here – honestly, subject at Uni isn’t important – neither is having a degree essential. I look for people who are creative, curious, and have an energy about them. Obsession with social, audiences and content performance is so much more important than paper! Coming with ideas and inspiration is a great way to get hired

No, you don’t need a degree. Just make a popular account yourself about anything and you can probably get hired.
