  • Intern seeking help for managing social media pages

I’ve recently accepted an internship at a start-up AI based travel company. My assignments originally started out as creating newsletters for their subscribers, but now I’m being tasked with helping them manage their social media pages like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram.

To provide some background, I’m a student pilot (AMEL CPL, studying for CFI) who’s a few weeks shy of getting my bachelors in Technical Communication. I haven’t taken any courses on social media management, and aside from using social media to look at memes and see the latest furloughs from Spirit and Mesa airlines, I do not utilize it. In fact, I make an effort to avoid using it too often. So, now that I’m being asked to help them create content for their social media pages, I’m a little overwhelmed if not lost.

I’ve done some research like compare social media management tools, try to gauge who their audience is, and brainstorm what kind of content would be best. But it heavily feels like I’m missing something.

Also, my biggest gripe right now is that, on all of their social media pages, they have virtually zero engagement on their posts, which makes it harder to pinpoint an audience. I know it’s only an internship, but if I’m going to make content for an audience, I want to figure out how to increase their engagement rate. I don’t want to sit there and churn butter just to realize there’s no milk

Sounds like you’re in a tricky spot, buddy. Social media management can be a beast, especially with zero engagement. Focus on creating valuable content for your target audience – think travel tips, AI insights, and industry news. Experiment with different post types and times. Use hashtags wisely. And don’t stress too much – building engagement takes time. Keep learning, stay consistent, and you’ll find your groove.

Consistency is key—try to post regularly and use tools like social media manager apps to schedule posts and track how well they’re doing. Also, I agree with the hashtags! They really do make a difference. Good luck!

Ask them who their competitors are and then look at them for inspiration. Note down some posts that you’d like to try that seems to work for them and test that out. Then look and evaluate the outcome and tweak the plan going forward.

Also analyse your sales data and see which are the most popular destinations right now, and then post about them. ‘Hot destinations right now’. Also, if you have exceptional cheap last minute flights then post about them, etc.
