Instagram Reels gaining views for an hour and then not gaining more later.
Posted by Severe_King7712 on October 7, 2024 at 12:32 pmI have a small instagram meme page with bout 7k followers and just had a video go semi viral with 1 million views and 60k likes, but after this all my reels are starting to get a significant amount of views in the first hour or 2 of posting and then stop getting views at all. why is this?

GuestOctober 7, 2024 at 12:49 pmI’m not sure of the Instagram algorithm, but I have observed that the TikTok algo does the same thing; it’s basically testing the video against a small audience first. If the video has good engagement/view time with that small audience, then it will show the video to more people. If the video performs with the wider audience, then the algo will show it to more and more groups of people until performance levels off when compared to competing videos. That’s how videos go viral.
If the video does not do well in the initial test, then it essentially withers.

GuestOctober 7, 2024 at 3:33 pmHey there OP.
I shared a bit of behind the scenes on [how the TikTok algorithm works](https://www.reddit.com/r/LovedByCreators/comments/1fxvfud/how_the_youtube_algorithm_works/) on another sub and while I’m still working to get more firm data on how IG performs – it’s pretty similar.
Usually the machine is testing a few things:
1. Does it understand on what audience bucket does your video should fall into.
2. Once that is decided, does it perform against that audience (and by perform it could be several different metrics).
3. If Yes, the video goes further. If not, it stops getting air time / get reduced air time.We do know that currently comments, saves and shares are worth more than likes on the scoring calculation that the system is doing it. Shoutouts also help if you can clearly fall into a niche. And people are gaming this as we speak.
Once I have more research on IG I will update with more details.
How the YouTube Algorithm Works

GuestOctober 7, 2024 at 8:29 pmyour initial followers served and a test pool of non-followers gauge whether or not instagram will continue to serve it to followers or non followers. its annoying. if those pools don’t like/share/comment/save then its likely the post will ‘die’ without getting much more reach

GuestOctober 8, 2024 at 5:17 amIt looks like Instagram is showing your reels early on but stops after a bit. Try posting at different times to see if it helps. Using popular hashtags and replying to comments can also keep the reel going longer. Sometimes, it’s just about trying different things to see what works!

GuestOctober 8, 2024 at 8:18 amThat is just how Instagrams algorithm is,
try not opening the app for an hour after posting, this has worked for me in the past
