I have seen other accounts use this technique, eg. a giveaway where to enter you have to tag people and follow the account. I am concerned that as someone with only near 400 followers that it might not gain traction on Instagram, and the money + time would be wasted. I would pay for the post to be promoted, and offer a free commission as the giveaway. I’m wondering if reels or a post be safer too.

Your instinct is right, you’ll probably get a small amount of engagement from such a promotion . Obviously you’d want to promote the contest heavily using the free channels in addition to any paid promotion you do, but you very well may only receive a small handful of followers from the giveaway so you just need to be ok with that.

All online promotion requires experimentation, so as long as you see it as a learning experience I’d say go for it, just temper your expectations. The worst case scenario is you end up making a free piece of art for one of the few people who truly appreciates your work, which isn’t the end of the world.

If you’re shipping a physical piece to the winner, make sure to include where in the world free shipping is included (as a guy who ships a lot of art, stick to your own country only, it can get expensive fast shipping international).

    Best of luck !

Do a giveaway with a bigger account, that’s better than promoting it

I’m far from an expert, but I’d suggest collaborating with another account, perhaps another artist you know? Then you’re providing exposure for each other and hopefully gaining like-minded followers.

In my experience running giveaways, I’d avoid using giveaway and competition hashtags as they tend to attract people who are on social media purely to enter competitions, regardless of the items being offered. So, you may attract new followers, but they’re unlikely to ever purchase your work from you.
