Context: I have an account for my car & automotive memes that went from 1k followers to 13k since November 2023 just by making lots of original reels consistently, 2 posts per day same time. Mostly memes, some other stuff sprinkled in, but always car community related. Probably 20-30 1M+ play reels, and 50+ 100k-1M reels. About 30-50 super engaged followers commenting frequently, and lots of shares to story.

A month ago, I posted a dashcam clip of some road rage I encountered and it did very well, and I added a few extra hashtags to reach a local audience of my urban area, subbing out maybe 5 of my normal ones. It hit 500k, and I posted maybe 6 more dashcam clips, with 2 of the others hitting 200k and 800k, and the others all 50k+. They all had this hashtag batch. I noticed that while posting them, my other normal posts were getting the same or less impressions, but many less likes and comments and shares. I suspect it’s because these views are mostly from this other more local audience, which is less likely to be interested in my normal content.

Should I stop posting the dashcam clips? I could make more, but it’s not nearly as sustainable or enjoyable to make as my other content.

Given the situation, it’s clear your dashcam clips attract a different audience than your regular content. Consider creating a separate account for dashcam content to maintain your original audience’s engagement, or balance your posting by alternating between dashcam and regular posts. Track performance and gather feedback to adjust your strategy.
