  • How to SEO a website with no content, like an online tool?

Posted by seohelper on April 11, 2020 at 8:41 am

I’ve recently become good enough at web development to start worrying about SEO in my websites, so apologies if this is totally noob question.

As my understanding of website architucture goes (backlinks, marketing, etc. aside), content is king for SEO. I’ve heard that SEO for javascript exists, but it doesn’t seem to be fully matured yet. I think my question can be best summarized by an example:

If I google “percentage calculator”, the first hit is http://www.percentagecalculator.net. Unless I’m missing something, this website is just a little javascript and a UI that calculates percentages. Almost no text at all.

How does one SEO optimize a site like that? I’m sure if I were to create a similar tool in a certain niche and wait 6 months, it won’t just magically jump to #1… right?

You have to think about the user intent, the rule of “content” does not apply here because the intent was a clear intention to use a calculator tool, they did not want to read the history of the calculator, the user did not want an explanation on how to make code for a calculator, so google will list several answers, and based on the amount of time the user expends on the website, they will determine your rank.
If you have something similar to a tool like a calculator, make sure it loads fast, if the first users find it useful, your page will rank higher than your competitors based on your UX (user experience)

Those sites mostly rank based on their link profile. There are a lot of online tools that do the exact same thing – online calculators, converting tool, pdf to jpeg, or videos from youtube, or etc, and the truth is, it always end up as a fight who has the best links. You can’t stand out with on-page content.

So you need to find people to link to your tool.

Content is not king for SEO. Links are the #1 ranking factor by a wide margin. That’s really all you need to know.
