How to make most out of SEO agency
Posted by yj292 on October 8, 2024 at 5:51 pmHi Folks,
My company is hiring an agency to take care of SEO. I want to learn SEO as well, since the only digital marketer in the team I'll be in direct contact with the agency. How can I make sure to learn SEO from the agency?yj292 replied 6 months, 2 weeks ago 2 Members · 1 Reply -

GuestOctober 8, 2024 at 6:16 pmHave bi-weekly to monthly meetings and ask as many questions that you can during those. Figure out why they are doing things, what the impact to the business is and how it shows up in reporting. IF the agency is good, you will learn a lot.

GuestOctober 8, 2024 at 6:40 pmEasiest and quickest way to learn from them is keep asking WHY?
They will likely present a list of things they’ll work on; technical SEO, on-page, off-page/links, etc.
At each stage ask them why they are doing it, and what value it will bring to the business. If you do this they’ll have to explain the why and you’ll learn.

GuestOctober 8, 2024 at 6:50 pmAsk “How does this task specifically contribute to the goal of XYZ” – if you are a local company / service business it should be pretty easy to rank without wasting time on a bunch of blog posts nobody reads.
Edit: *should* relates directly to business category -

GuestOctober 8, 2024 at 7:21 pmBe A Squeaky Wheel. From my agency experience, we get 10+ clients monthly and it’s easy to get tunnel vision. Be patient with results but be demanding upfront about transparency and execution.

GuestOctober 8, 2024 at 9:26 pmAsk them to explain their strategies, why they choose certain keywords or optimizations. Understanding the “why” is key! Regular check-ins can help, and don’t hesitate to ask questions, there are no dumb SEO questions! Try to get hands-on whenever you can.

GuestOctober 8, 2024 at 9:44 pmI started my SEO journey watching Nathan gotch beginner course on the yt semrush channel. 18 months later I still think his advices are really valuables, unlike many mainstream youtubers in that field.
I’d recommand you to check it out, it will give you a good idea about wtf is going on. Maybe you’ll avoid to get scammed

GuestOctober 8, 2024 at 10:24 pmNo offense but you’re not going to learn enough to be dangerous by just putting a few hours in. You’ll have to treat it like a job…which I’m assuming you aren’t going to do because you’re outsourcing.
It’s a full time job. I do it. It’s no different than a corporate 9-5. The only difference is agency owners are just farming out that work and scraping the profits. There’s no way around it – Google makes it challenging for a reason.

GuestOctober 8, 2024 at 10:36 pmI’d probably start by listening to Grumpy SEO Guy episode 21. You’ll learn more in a half hour than the agency would share with you in a year.
SEO is a big thing. It’s not a little thing you learn here and there and do some SEO to your website.

GuestOctober 8, 2024 at 11:03 pmThey should be pretty transparent about their tactics so just to review their work for tech, link building and content strategies.
If they say certain tactics are “secret” or “proprietary” I’d be concerned. It’s in their best interest you understand what they’re doing.

^ great resource if you need an overview of how the itty gritty works. Good to learn the relevant jargons as well so that you don’t get fluffed by what the agency says.
