How Many Keywords Per Ad Group?

Posted by LilJQuan on November 6, 2022 at 11:38 am

I’ve seen a fair bit of contention between PPC freelancers / agencies as to how many keywords people use in their ad groups and thats also not to mention match types.

How many keywords do you put per ad group?

There is no point for the poll because the choices are random numbers. You put as many as you want in an ad group, but obviously you need to make sure the campaign has enough budget for all ad groups and all keywords, or else some keywords will not get that much traffic due to budget limitations.

The only condition is to make sure each ad group is about one theme/sub-theme, and not a mishmash of themes and products.

I don’t know that there is a rule of thumb. Sometimes I have ad groups with only a single keyword. Sometimes I have 10, sometimes 20, sometimes more. I typically group by theme and will add as many as makes sense to do so depending on the landing page and how well I can optimize and copy to include all the keywords I’m bidding on.

As time goes on, I’ll add keywords to ad groups. Eventually I may split them into separate groups if trends or themes emerge.

It varies. This is a dumb poll.

I usually like a good 1-20, highly-similar keywords to start per ad group.

My manager hates this approach that I have, and demands I put in upwards of 100-200 per ad group and it’s maddening.

I have hundreds of keywords in certain ad groups, as long as they’re relevant to the same theme/topic, the ad text & the landing page (i.e: receive good Quality Score) then putting a limit on the number of them for some “PPC urban legend folklore” reason is stupid

    Number of keywords is irrelevant.

    Aim for quality/relevance.
