  • How many accounts should one person handle?

Posted by find_magic on April 21, 2023 at 12:32 pm

I have been hired as a half day social media manager for a marketing company. I work four hours a day and am the only one doing social media. I am currently juggling 12 clients (and growing) on Insta and FB. My employers keep pushing to do more videos and interesting content but I barely have time to get factory processed Canva stuff out which I hate.

I am stressed and overworked, putting in unpaid extra hours every day. They gave me time off for the extra hours I worked but then I get even more stressed because I run behind.

How many clients should one social media manager have? Any suggestions as to what I should do?

Do as many as you can handle. Sounds like you are over extending.

Stop growing? You can’t handle it. Release some and take only a few.

I am a one man consulting firm. I manage 17 accounts and website content. I’m reaching my limit but I need to overextend before I can expand.

Take as many as you can handle. I only have one client right now and that’s enough for me.

If you can’t handle what’s on your plate, you can’t handle it. 12 clients is a lot depending on their posting schedule and creating custom content for all of them (even with tools like Canva) can get overwhelming.

    Also:

    > I am stressed and overworked, putting in unpaid extra hours every day. They gave me time off for the extra hours I worked but then I get even more stressed because I run behind.

I had to learn this the hard way, stop doing unpaid work. If the workload is too much for employee, that is NOT the employee’s fault, it’s management’s. Either stay clocked in to do the work, or (my choice), clock out, let them know what’s not getting done due to time constraints, and let them worry about it.

Obviously, this is factoring in none of the personal context of your relationship with the clients, but you are being taken advantage of for those unpaid hours. It is wage theft, if you work, you are entitlted to those wages. If they won’t pay you, they’re not entitled to your work.

Overall, it sounds like they need to hire someone else. You can’t be expected (though marketers often are) to produce the same output as an entire team. Take care of yourself first, worry about the work second. The less stressed you make yourself, the better and more efficient you’ll be when you are working. It’s a positive feedback loop (and why things like the 4-day work week are taking off) that can only help.

12 is an insane amount for 1 person to manage. OP look after yourself, this shit can really take a toll on your mental if you let it.

I’ve worked as a Social Media Manager for 8 years and 12 clients is too much for one person. I worked for an agency and at one time I managed 15, you heard me correct 15! One day the GM told me I was doing the work of two people. I was writing 400 posts in a month including editing video.

With that many clients you can’t grow the pages because you’re spending too much time creating content. You will burn ???? out. If the company that you work for doesn’t see the strain you’re under start looking for another job ASAP. I’ve been there it is not worth it. If you have no staff helping you…RUN FOR THE HILLS.

    Can you afford a assistant?
If not , check if you are unsercharging .
Also are you using automation tools? They generally make work quite a bit easier.
