  • How important are <h> tags for SEO?

Posted by seohelper on March 5, 2020 at 6:48 pm

    Hey guys,

I have a blog with 53 articles that I’ve started a year ago. I always use <h2> or <h3> tags for my headings and subheading. I’ve recently noticed that I do not use <h> tags for my in-text “sub-sub-headings”.

For instance, in my “Specifications” and “Design” sections, I have “sub-sub-headings”, like “Crystal”, “Water Resistance”, “Bezel”, etc..

I never bothered using <h> tags for these, so I just used regular text with a bold and underlined bigger font.

From now on, I’ve decided to use <h> tags for these sub-sub-headings too, but my question is: is it worth going back through my 53 articles to add <h4> tags for this text, or should I simply do it from now on, and not bother for my old articles? In other words, will this change have a significant impact on the SEO of my older articles?

    Thanks for your help

No it will not have a significant impact on SEO. Read Moz’s case study on this – they found that even the use of H2 instead of H1 doesn’t make much of a difference. Google has said this, too: John Mueller said that Google is good at understanding headings based on formatting (font size and weight) more so than heading tags. I would still use the heading tags as an easy way to achieve the formatting you want, but don’t concern yourself with them too much for ranking purposes.
