  • How does Reddit collect data about users?

I'm working on a phone app, where I'd like to have good info about the users so I could give them accurate recommendations without the users having to first type long queries or user profile descriptions.

As I've been using Reddit, I've noticed that of all the possible threads that Reddit could show on the main page, it shows threads that really correspond extremely well with what I might be expected to be interested in. It's obvious that Reddit will probably run all my posts and comments through some algorithms to give me better recommendations, but seems that Reddit knows even more about my interests than that.

Given that I don't have the Reddit app, where does Reddit get this info from? Is there some API with advertisers where you can get info like this also for non advertising purposes, or does Reddit maybe purchase this data from somewhere?

How much time you spend on a thread, what posts you comment on, what content you upvote and downvote (including comments and posts), and prob even how long you keep a certain post on your phones screen before scrolling away (and this is without even clicking on the post itself-TikTok’s algorithm does this and learns from your behavior without the user interacting with the post by liking it or any of the comments under it)
