  • How does instagram know people I know irl, without access to my contacts?

So I finally made an instagram account. I didn't give it permission to use my contacts, and yet it's somehow suggesting people from my contacts that I know. And not only that, it's literally suggesting people I know from middle school that I've barely even thought of since and don't have the contact information for. How does it know this much about me and the people I know?

If anyone in your phone contacts list has given permission to IG to share their contact list then your info has already been shared. They will then suggest folks based on the that list along with others that have shared contact info.

I totally agree it’s super creepy. I really hate that apps do this, but I get why they do it.

Also, if you use the same wifi as people, it will assume you know them and suggest.

I believe there is a proximity algorithm, too. I’ve been connected/ suggested with people I font know just by being in the same room more than once

Data brokers like Acxiom sell our info to social media companies, that’s how.
