How do you work with networks that you don’t personally enjoy?
I have a hard time endorsing the use of things professionally that I don’t “get” in my personal life. I realize that this is a flaw although I also let it guide my client selection.
E.g.
I’m a huge fan of YouTube (notwithstanding the fact that there’s a lot of junk there). And so when clients say they want to grow on YT so long as it’s the right format for the type of content they want to produce I’m generally psyched to get working.
The problem with my approach is that it leaves me with knowledge gaps
For instance – I don’t use Instagram and Tik Tok because they’re not networks I personally enjoy. I’ve never really connected without the trend of short vertical video – specifically YouTube Shorts, IG and FB reels etc.
So to air the question that I sometimes pose to myself:
Is it reasonable to allow your personal social media preferences to dictate the type of clients you take on and the sort of work you end up engaging with them for?
Or do you go with the strategy of letting market network preferences dictate the skill set you develop irrespective of how popular specific networks are?
