  • How do you use utm_medium?

Can I use different utm_medium values to identify which specific source location my traffic came from? For example, Instagram carousel, Instagram post, Instagram reels, Instagram stories, Instagram bio.

    utm_medium bio

    utm_medium post

    utm_medium stories

    utm_medium reels

    utm_medium carousel

How do you do this tracking?

Source is referrer (Google, newsletter etc)

Medium is placement (email, cpc, banner)

Campaign is for wider marketing initiative (summer sale, new product launch etc)

Honestly these days I just type in my info into gpt to generate tags in bulk to give to wider marketing team

Yeah, I use utm_medium to track specific ads or sections on a page too.

You basically craft your ad / referrer URLs so when users visit you know your placement is working effectively and can track exactly where they came from and what budget paid for it if any.

We funnel leads to different campaigns based on this information. So all FB organic, FB ads, etc go to different buckets. We have over 100 different campaigns for internal and 3rd parties like this.

We pack the params into an object that’s stored in a cookie. Then grab that and decrypt it before merging it into the final submission.

Look up in GA4 as a filter source/medium. This helps you determine where the traffic is coming from.

You can also add UTM fields to your forms and store the values in local storage with JS.

When user submits it will also submit the UTM fields into the form, letting you kno where the traffic came from.
