How do you think social media has changed the way we communicate our opinions?
Posted by unverifiedapparel on October 10, 2024 at 6:03 pmI got into a discussion the other day with a client and we were talking about how social media is making people meaner, we say things to people online that we would never say in person and there's less room for nuance in discussion. Do you think this is true and if there's any hope it'll get better or will it get worse?

GuestOctober 10, 2024 at 6:57 pmI think it becomes more difficult to communicate in an online forum because you miss all of the social cues that come with in-person interactions.

GuestOctober 10, 2024 at 7:51 pmThe big thing I tend to notice is that social media tends to value *having* an opinion on the latest issue, whether or not you understand it. It definitely makes some people meaner, but it can also have the opposite effect. What it really does to communication and opinions is rush us into positions on matters that aren’t really any of our business, including others’ personal lives.

GuestOctober 10, 2024 at 11:36 pmI feel like social media being a wealth of knowledge is such a gift and curse with opinions. Just because we HAVE the information at our fingertips doesn’t mean we have ALL the information and context. This phenomenon creates “psuedo-experts” where everyone thinks they are right due to the echo chambers they choose to participate in. For better or for worse.

GuestOctober 11, 2024 at 5:45 amWe stop communicating at all. Everybody tries to sell something and nobody listen. Social media it is just mindless scrolling and scrolling and scrolling and new content and new content and new content… And then we have discussion about dead internet.

GuestOctober 11, 2024 at 1:39 pmSocial media has definitely turned people into keyboard warriors. It’s like everyone got a free pass to throw shade without the face-to-face consequences. Nuance? That’s lost somewhere between the 140 characters and the cat memes. Will it get better? Who knows. Maybe if we all collectively calm down and remember that real humans are on the other side of the screen. But honestly, I wouldn’t hold my hopes up. 😅

GuestOctober 11, 2024 at 5:13 pmSocial media influences people’s decisions and the way people think. Like I have noticed people completely change what they are passionate about because of social media. Social Media can be the worst thing for a person but the best for another person. The money you can make on social media is honestly insane.
