How do you manage phone storage?
Posted by brokencompass502 on June 26, 2024 at 11:54 amI have 2 phones with tons of storage – and I'm still almost constantly running out of space due to the number of videos I shoot to create.
I want to just delete old unused footage after I post, but there have been many times that I've regretted doing so. I've tried uploading old footage to USB drives (memory sticks) but it's all so disorganized. I never know which clips are on what drive, etc. I manage to free up just enough space here and there but it's all so disorganized.
What are the tips you all have for keeping the phones free of clutter while also saving potentially valuable footage for later?

GuestJune 26, 2024 at 3:28 pmI bought a Crucial external hard drive and it’s brilliant. I think 1tb was about £60 off eBay. I just moved about 50gb off my phone and it took literal seconds. I bought a cheap flash drive at first and it corrupted, I lost tonnes of stuff. Even put it in a shop to be recovered but it was soundly fucked. I highly recommend Crucial.

GuestJune 26, 2024 at 9:00 pmI would definitely recommend buying an external hard drive and transferring your footage over every month or so. Set up folders and label according to client and date (or project and date). Keep them with your computer so you can easily plug one in and edit off of it. It will save you a lot of headache. Additionally, you can back everything up to Google Photos to have two backup options.

To deal with organization, I have folders in the top level named “0 Inbox”, “1 In Progress”, “2 Reference”, “9 Archive”
In 0 Inbox folder, I dump random stuff in there to rename and sort through later. When I rename it, I name it with the YYYYMMDDHHMM format of the date the video was recorded, this will come in handy later on this comment.
In 1 In Progress folder, there’s a folder for each “end result video”. Within each of those folders are the assets for each individual end result video, such as the actual video, b roll, images, a text document for notes or titles, etc. All of those separate assets are in their own folder to create a single video.
In 2 Reference folder is frequently referenced assets, such as logos or pictures I use frequently. I make a copy of these and put the copy in the corresponding folder in the “1 In Progress” folder.
When a video is done and published, I keep the completed video in the same folder with all the separate assets, rename the folder to the date I published it and title, and move the folder from 1 In Progress to 9 Archive.
Above is the general asset flow for my videos. But I do also clip shorts from my long form videos and create new shorts. For new shorts not clipped out of long videos, I use the same flow above. For clipped shorts out of long form videos, I just name it the long form video date recorded and the short form clip clipped. Such as “202401311200-202402011400” where 202401311200 is the YYYYMMDDHHMM format of the long form video date and 202402011400 is the YYYYMMDDHHMM format of the date the short clip was clipped. This way I can know which long form videos I already clipped shorts out of. Then I just take the clips through the same flow above but put them in a separate archive only for shorts.
I took inspiration from the Getting Things Done method by David Allen to organize my videos this way. Using his terminology, everything in 0 Inbox is “Stuff”, everything in “1 In Progress” is Projects, there are no Next Actions, “2 Reference” is References, and I add a folder “9 Archive” for completed Projects/Videos I want to keep, and I keep everything related to one video in the same folder. From his system, there is also a Someday/Maybe list, I use my notes app for that for new ideas.

OneDrive backups photos/videos organized into folders thus I can manage footage via desktop.large files (to be combined/edited): move out of cloud into hard drive based on folders. ie “redbull race”. Made over desktop.
Small files and edited footage. Remains on phone.
P. S. I also run NAS storage, just to backup all media library via Wi-Fi, no cables needed.
IPhone:
OneDrive messes all folders.
Pull all footage from iPhotos via desktop. Copy the big files to hard drive then delete on iPhone.
Small files and edited footage remains on phone.
