If my capacity is filled and I refer to another agency do i ask for anything in return? Like a referral fee or anything – lawyers do this I think but I’m not sure how the process usually goes

    That’s up to you really.

I have some SEOs who I swap leads with based on competency. E.g. if I don’t have experience w something specific, I refer leads to someone else and vice versa.

Some agencies also do around 10% referral charges either one-time or recurring, but it’s up to you how u handle it.

I had some a-hole refer a company to me and I signed the company as a client. 3 months later, the referrer demanded I pay his finder fee of 15% of the contract for hooking me up with this client. There were other issues with this person too — including the fact that he was the human manifestation of slime.

Most freelancers and businesses have no problem paying a finder’s fee, but they need to up front — before anyone talks to the client — that you’re charging, how much, and for how long (1x, full contract, etc.) so they can adjust their price accordingly.

Some people offer a referral fee and others don’t.
