How do I get some basic knowledge of SEO quickly?
So in my last year of college I was working in a social media/communications based role for a scientific conference. So when I graduated, I figured I might as well apply for roles similar to that and focus on communications work. However, one thing I never had the opportunity to work on is SEO so I often go into job interviews explaining to people “I know what this is but I’ve never had direct experience with it” and I want to have a better answer. Is there anything I can do to change this and get some experience in it without ever having actually done it in a work setting?

You can read some basic SEO guidlines blog such as Mozblog, Search Engine Journal blog, watch beginning guidelines YouTube video which are get some basic knowledge of SEO. I suggest you watch YouTube SEO videos which is easy and quickly understand SEO with improve practical knowledge as well.

You could definitely build your first website and take the hustle to rank it. Most of us started there. Its a nice long road, you have to be passionate though ^^ (as for anything you learn). I agree with previous replies : moz puts up great content same as Backlinko.

Try using free blogging sites at the start, like bloggers, medium, etc. and try implementing SEO techniques that you can learn from youtube videos, or beginner SEO blogs.
Buying domain and hosting, and working on it is always the best way to learn SEO

Practice is a key factor in SEO, I’m certain that many SEO experts would agree with this statement though because there are tons of contents to learn SEO and how to implement, but when we put those studied to real life, It will become overwhelming to understand the core concepts of SEO.
The best way to learn SEO is to be in SEO. because you need the practice to change whatsoever with the website, You’ve to setup a WordPress site and go for a low hanging fruit keywords, and implement a content strategy that could rank on SERPs.
Go with another strategy, build a blog with medium competitive keywords, find some backlinks and pour them, Approach link outreach studies, and see the result. then you might have a glimpse of ideas to improve in SEO metrics.
Create another saturated or high competitive niche, Mix both strategies and implement it. then you’ll definitely see the results within weeks or months.
With these 3 blogs, you’ll learn and obtain massive experience in SEO. These specified experiences won’t be able to get through by reading books or watching videos. You’ll actually become a better SEO specialist compared to those who in the field for years.

There is no better tool I have found as a first place to learn SEO than The Beginner’s Guide to SEO from Moz. It’s free, and it starts by answering basic questions such as “What is SEO?” Read the entire guide once and you will know more than the people who send you those spam emails every day. Read it twice and you will know more than most of the so-called SEO experts. If you have the time to do just one thing to learn SEO, read the Moz guide.
