  • How do I get backlinks for my local business without buying them and potentially harming my site?

My only realistic option is to ask my business grant program coordinator to display my website URL on the government webpage of participants’ profiles. Would that be a strong backlink?

Getting links from the chamber of commerce, government entities, and other highly authoritative local sites is the best way to gain relevance for local. Also one of the most difficult as you will need to reach out to them – though if you are a legit local business, they shouldn’t have issues with adding your site to the relevant page on their site.

It would be in your best interest to find the correct page on their site so you can package it all up nicely for them.

Start with local citations. Using a reputable tool for that is easy & safe. Then hire content writers. I know it’s a wild concept to most SEOs, but just because it’s hard doesn’t mean you can cheat the system. Great content, infographics, video, all will naturally earn you backlinks. Product/Service guides are a great place to start. You should also consider finding media/publisher connections. Apply to be an expert content creator for their site. Do a little research on the best ones for your industry and reach out to. Usually, you can’t add direct backlinks, but you can get backlinks from your author profile. That all still flows back to your site.

Press releases can go a long way for this. Can you tell any part of your business story in any inspiring way? Start at PRNewswire and they’ll get syndicated like crazy.
Anther option? Do original research, turn it into a map, email it to a bunch of bloggers in the space. People love maps. I’ve seen everything from the average color of blue jeans in each state to maps of of the most popular last name in each european country. Doesnt have to be a map, but some interesting infographic next to blog content about the research. Reaching out to the bloggers via email or contact forms is key.

Just buy them. Everyone does it. Just make sure you’re working with a solid vendor.

Google is a digital mafia – play the game.
