On-page SEO and backlinks constitute 95 percent (my guess) of what SEO is really about. While people often focus on page speed, etc., it’s often perceived as time wasted for minimal impact.

You’ll get value with questions here if you ask a more in depth question that reveals you’ve done some research.
For instance, “I read somewhere about link bait content. What is that, do you have any examples?”
Specificity is your friend.

Why are backlinks still so heavily valued? The practice is dated IMO. It was relevant when blogging was at its peak and would add their favorite blogs/sites onto their blogroll.

Backlinks are basically the main thing that ranks a site. Consider it a popularity contest on google.
