  • Help me to start a social media presence after layoff

I got laid off last month and since then I have been trying to start my own startup. My target audience are local business and also um making a course where the audience are mostly gen z. I used last month making the website, social media profiles and planning. But I need to start making and putting content on social media to make an audience base. But i am confuses about two things-

    1. I dont know what to share, should I share formal business oriented content like selling the service that I offer or start sharing my daily vlog of founder journey after being laid off?
    2. Which social media platform to build audience and content marketing from scratch? Instagram or youtube or twitter or anything else??

Plz share me some suggestion. I really need to figure out something by July because my severence is going to end on july.

I’d suggest finding another job. You want people to buy a course from you when you just got laid off?? Why would anyone trust what you’re selling if you can’t keep a job? How do you NOT know what to post? This whole startup is your idea anyway and you don’t know what content to put out? It’s like saying I’m going to build a store and then ask others what I should sell…. You need to know what value and info you’re providing. What’s different from you than all the others?
These are the questions you need to ask yourself before asking reddit to make your marketing strategy.

The first thing you need to do is research your niche. You need to analyze the strategies of similar startups that provide services to local businesses. This can also help you decide which platform to choose for your launch.

Go to Instagram, YouTube, Twitter and look for the most successful cases, they will be on the surface. Next, look at their content strategy and audience. Gather insights on which posts get the most and least engagement. Analyze their unique takes and adapt them for your own future strategy.

u/pp227, why do you want to start a social media presence? What are your goals with it?

Social media is a fantastic tool to market your startup, but only if you have a solid plan for what you want.

You might be uncertain about what your audience wants to see, or you’re having an anxious day and can’t think straight. Or maybe you’re just not feeling it – no inspiration, no motivation and nothing is coming to mind.

Sorry to hear about your layoff, but excited to see you’re taking the entrepreneurial leap!

For content, consider a mix of both formal business content and your founder journey vlogs to showcase your personality and authenticity.

As for platforms, Instagram and YouTube are great for visual storytelling and Gen Z engagement. Twitter is ideal for real-time networking and industry discussions.

Start with one platform, create engaging content, and leverage relevant hashtags to grow your audience. Good luck, and hoping your startup flourishes!

Find another job for now homie.

I used to be an instructor, now I develop courses and assist with system engineering.

Are you a subject matter expert in the field you are creating a course for?

Congrats on starting your startup! For targeting Gen Z, here are some quick tips:

First, define your goals, whether it’s brand awareness, lead generation, or something else. It’s crucial to understand that Gen Z values authenticity and engagement. Your content strategy should mix formal business content with your founder journey, sharing both educational content and engaging stories.

For the best platforms to reach Gen Z, TikTok is ideal for short, engaging, and creative videos. Instagram is great for visual content, stories, and reels, while YouTube is perfect for longer, in-depth content like vlogs and tutorials. Starting with TikTok and Instagram can help you quickly build an engaged Gen Z audience, while YouTube can support deeper, more detailed content.

Building your audience requires regular posting and interaction. Collaborate with local businesses or influencers and use relevant hashtags to follow trends. Track the performance of your content to see what resonates best with your audience and adjust your strategy accordingly. Planning your content with a calendar will help you stay organized and consistent.

Stay authentic, engage with your community, and refine your strategy. Good luck!

It’s smart to blend business updates with your personal founder journey. People dig authenticity, so mix in some behind-the-scenes stuff, as it makes you relatable. As for platforms, figure out where your peeps hang out most. Instagram’s awesome for visuals and local biz, while YouTube could rock for tutorials and vlogs. Start with one, build up, then expand. You got this. Best of luck with your startup comeback.

I think your daily vlog of founder journey idea is brilliant!

Having a your own personality to the videos helps you stand out so I’d suggest not fix yourself on how other people do it, I think the phrase for that is Good artists copy, Great artist steal. Finding that tone of ones content takes time that’s for some takes years to find vanity metrics, if they are starting from the scratch. But yeah finding personality is crucial.

As far as the platforms concerns, doing the research around local businesses online presence will help you make that decision I guess.

Post content your target market will find valuable. What product/service is your business trying to provide to local businesses? I hope it’s not marketing services. lol
