This seems an interesting question with the advent of generative ai, and Meta's push for what they call an augmented "metaverse". But "metaverse" still seems to be along way away from realization

Depends entirely on your audience that you want to sell to. If your customer is over 40 you can basically hit all of them with Meta advertising, because they still spend more time on there than they do watching TV. Friends babies, birthdays, everyone’s pets, random annoying political garbage. It’s got everything they love lol 😅

Is it really that far away, though?

In the last 2 years we’ve gone from language models that can barely hold a conversation, to AI chatbots that can mimic pretty much any character with incredible realism. Picture generation is clearly good enough to fool most people and video generation is now here too, albeit expensive to run.

The metaverse isn’t going to be a place you hang out with your friends or meet new people, at least not primarily. It’s going to be filled with AI bots that we have even more fun talking to, and most people won’t be able to tell the difference between who is real and who isn’t.

If the metaverse was Facebook’s unhealthy TV dinner, AI is the Doritos and Coke finisher.

No argument over AI’s amazing abilities, but how do you apply that to a social network? Does anyone really want to spend their days talking to bots? We’re not just looking for amusement, we also want friends. This isn’t it.
