  • Has anyone noticed an increase of hostility while running a social media business page?

    I’ve been using social media for 10+ years now (in the business space particularly) and lately it seems like users just spend most of their time attacking our employees. It often has nothing to do with the actual product we are advertising, it’s just insults.

    A good example of comments I have to delete or hide on a Monday morning are:

    * Fat cunt
    * Lose some weight
    * You are ugly
    * This person has no idea what they are talking about
    * <Racist shit>

    I just don’t remember it being this bad in past years. Perhaps it’s me just dwelling on the negative stuff but at least lately it feels horrible to be a person who puts themselves onto any social media platform to advertise a product.

    I think it’s crazy that back in the 2000s, our tutors used to tell us to always be anonymous and never reveal our true identity when using the internet. Now people will straight post racist crap about our employees using their real Facebook accounts.

    This may sound a little bit bad on my part. Still, the brutal reality is if you use people who could be perceived as Fat, Cunty, Ulgy, or Stupid staff members in your content, then you will inevitably get those comments. You must either learn to get used to it or use better-looking, more relatable people in your content.

    When you look at professionally made advertising content, they do one of two things (or a combination of both)

    A. Hire beautiful, articulate people.
    B. Use less beautiful, articulate people but have a high production value.

    You may want to add comment filters if this keeps happening. I think this has always been part of existing on social media but perhaps your content is landing in the wrong people’s feed. Your consumer base should be interested in your content, not immediately insulting it.

    Yep. But I think a lot of that results from the shift to video. In the past, we mostly shared still photos of products and things you could do with those products. Now there are more likely to be videos of actual people. And folks love to hate on people.

    We also get weird brigades of folks who love to be mad about perceived slights. We’ll share an interesting article about how our product was used in the past for Black History Month, and suddenly people with zero commenting history with us are up in arms because what about Italian history??? And why do we hate America???

    We have a great reputation among our community for handling conversations like this, but it’s still a bit baffling.

    Yup plus when people are sharing opportunities with others to make and/or save money they get reported and banned..

    Hate and personal feelings comes from moderators of the groups on social media as well.

    Anyways Just keep in mind that success comes with effort. And successful people just keep on going, like the Energizer Bunny.

    Best to you

    I manage a page related to public policy issues. Yeah, the discourse has devolved.

    People are over seeing ads on social media and I think people enjoy bashing the advertisers. 🤣
