I’m just curious if anyone has went from owning their own agency and then later working In-house ?
Did doing so help you build a good portfolio that you could use to present for a certain social media position ?

Kind of. I went from my own agency / LLC to working in-house at a larger agency. My own work and portfolio definitely got me the job. Do I recommend that pipeline? Not really… freelance pays better, you can raise your rates at will, it also offers more flexibility and autonomy of workload. Going into a larger organization didn’t feel like an upgrade to me. It would perhaps be worthwhile if the in-house role brings you into an entirely new pay scale, or they are matching your 401k, or you have significantly better healthcare benefits.

But if your main goal is to be in-house and you don’t have the experience yet, freelance is a great stepping stone.

I did the opposite way, actually. I think it’s gonna be hard for someone to go down from being business owner to become employee

No, I’ve not, but there’s gotta be many factors that will be influencing such decisions by any individual. Basically, the later would be better than the former.

I freelanced as a copywriter for years before going in-house in social media. My experience is the primary reason I got the job. (Or the initial job. Been promoted twice since then.)

On reflection, I just don’t have the right personality to be my own boss. My manager was an asshole and my employee was an idiot.

Four years and an unexpected ADHD diagnosis later, I’ve just come to embrace the fact that I do better in an environment with more structure. Plus my health benefits are seriously clutch, which means I’ve been getting all the support I need to take care of my physical and mental health. I’m not pulling down scads of money, but I’m comfortably ensconced in the middle class. I’m on track with retirement savings and can spoil my adorable senior dog.

My props to those who thrive as entrepreneurs, I’m just better suited to being someone else’s right hand man, so long as I respect and trust them.

I have, I own and still do own my own agency.
I used all the work I did for my agency on my portfolio, spruced up my resume & got a job at a big fin-tech firm while still getting some agency money all the side.

I’ve tried it; but no luck. I think agencies are scared to hire me because I can nab their clients or trade secrets; than just carry on lol. I mean; I don’t really blame them.

I freelance for a few agencies. I learned real quick I am NOT a good employee after owning my own and tend to treat my employer as a client rather than an employer—not all employers want a recommendation, just want you to do the job. Further I like MY TOOLS. I can’t go from my perfectly customized Adobe programs to their crappy version of CS6 or worse…Canva.
