  • Hardware engineer turning to social media – struggling to break free from ‘methodical’ creativity

Hi all, I'm posting because, as a young professional science person who's been in science for a significant portion of her life, I'm very passionate about starting my YouTube channel. But often, I feel a creator's block since the "left side of my brain is more dominant." I don't think this is actually a thing, but I often feel kind of rigid (?). Although I know I'm quite artsy deep inside, I struggle to tap into that creativity when it comes to creating content.

It's like I get stuck in a cycle of overthinking or wanting everything to be perfect before I even start, which makes it hard to just let loose and be creative. I have ideas but struggle to bring them to life in a way that feels authentic. Has anyone else had this feeling before? How did you overcome it? Any advice or tips for someone trying to break out of this analytical mindset and embrace their creative side more?

You’re not alone! Many people with analytical backgrounds struggle with creativity. Try starting small without aiming for perfection. Set time limits to brainstorm or create, and embrace your unique blend of science and creativity it might just make your content stand out!

Start by setting small creative challenges for yourself to gradually shift from an analytical mindset to a more creative one. Focus on progress rather than perfection—the key is to allow yourself to experiment freely without self-judgment. Another approach is to schedule regular creative playtime where you can brainstorm ideas without the pressure to produce something perfect. Setting deadlines for your content can also help overcome overthinking. Embrace imperfections as part of the learning process. Collaborating with other creators can provide fresh perspectives and inspiration. Lastly, watch and learn from similar content creators to see how they infuse creativity into their work. This might help spark your own creativity while staying authentic to your style.

You’ve got to be your own project manager. Set time limits for projects. X hours/days for design, Y hours/days for completion. Film the entire process and acknowledge when you fail. Use your mistakes as an angle to tell a story. Incorporate that into a larger video series revisiting the idea/project or a longer video.

There’s a place for left-brained thinking on social media. It can be great for growing your channel and staying consistent with your quality/output. What’s important, however, is not letting it get in the way.

If you just need a little push, you could try some simple daily writing exercises to help you explore different creative avenues. I’ll also occasionally use ChatGPT to suggest some new ideas, just to help me get from 0 to 1 with brainstorming.

This is also where collaboration can be a huge help in the process. Even the channels that are entirely built around one persona usually have a few people helping with editing, research, and content planning.
