GTM tag: How to explain the client what to do with it?

Posted by Mission-Let-4831 on August 5, 2024 at 7:40 am

Hi guys, how do you explain the client what to do with the GTM code? I know I have to send them instructions on how to do it, but I m not sure myself what happens with the code. Do you have a basic text with instructions that you just send them along with the code?

Thank you so much for your help. 🙂

There are 2 blocks of code, 1 that you put in the <head> (as high as possible) and the other you put in body (as high as possible). Any developer should know what to do with this information.

This is just for implementing the basic container though. In reality you probably want the datalayer installed. In most cases this means using a plugin specific to the CMS. In that case you wouldn’t need to manually install the container because the plugin would generally handle that part.

For example, with wordpress I highly recommend a plugin called GTM4WP. With this you get access to events like add to cart, crucial data like revenue, and also customer data needed for enhanced conversions.

Ask for access the the website and you’re set. Tell them they can delete when you are done. I’ve never had a client that won’t give access

In simple terms? It’s one of those doorbell lasers shops have, except it’s for a website and the doorbell is super quiet and not annoying. Doorbell laser triggers when someone picks up a product to have a look, triggers when they move between parts of the store.

Laser that sees when someone bought something and leave the shop with a receipt.

GTM lets you set up all the necessary lasers and then adjust them remotely instead of having to visit the shop every damn time to change batteries or do other small maintenance work.

    Clients should get it.

“I’m not sure myself what’s happens with the code”

Please don’t take people’s money for these services if you don’t have SOPs (or understanding) of proper conversion tracking implementation. Leaving tag implementation up to the client is leaving your performance in someone else’s hands (and their unknown skill level).

Set aside 20 hours this week, learn how to use Google Tag Manager from the ground up. Learn to use it for GA4 and Facebook pixel implementation. You will increase your insights and results, as well as your value to the client. The more value you bring, the more you can charge. Get paid on that 20 hours of learning for the rest of your life.

It’s almost always easier to do this yourself, assuming you know what you’re doing. Otherwise you can jump on a screen share and walk them through it.

You need a developer for this depending on their CMS or your knowledge of JavaScript.
