It looks like the SERP will remain unchanged and still contain paid shopping ads, and there will be paid ad carousels on the top and bottom of the Shopping tab. As far as I can tell everything else will be free organic listings. Thoughts?

This is only on the shopping tab, which is a totally different experience the SERP. Plus shopping started out as free back in 2013. Google is going back to their roots to get more data.

As other have said it will just be the middle of the shopping tab. Afaik we have no visibility over how many of our existing impressions/clicks/etc are in that space so can’t estimate what the impact will be.

Meh, 90% of traffic is on [Google.com](https://Google.com) and the remainder is on [Google.com/Shopping](https://Google.com/Shopping) and Google.com/Images. This is a piddly amount of traffic and there’s ads at the top. This isn’t major news. The only benefit is for shoppers who now see more listings and relevant listings in the free results regardless of if a merchant has budget/bids behind those listings.

Nobody clicks on the shopping tab. This is a publicity stunt.

Google must be making a marketplace for facebook in future, in a blog it was also mentioned that users will be able to order directly from the local vendors from the listings and google will only show the vendors that have that product in stock or accepts online payments

Can you pull where the click came from for shopping? I swear back in the day I could pull shopping clicks for the search page vs the shopping tab, but can’t seem to find it now. I might be wrong.

Its definitely not free lol our rep said we could expect a 5% lift in clicks from free listings. And you know this is likely a play to get people who may not have done shopping in the past to get hooked on it and eventually pay for shoppint

Obviously this is great for those with little to no budget. And it could work nicely for users selling long-tail products

On the other hand my initial reading of this was: “pay more to get the same exposure for your paid shopping ads, or you’ll get swamped by the new organic shopping listings.”

This screams out guilt to me

For so long, they have systematically made organic search more content focused rather than sales/leads driving people to advertising to get traffic. Now due to the circumstances people are spending on ads and getting no organic traffic.

Seems like there “make people spend more on ads” focused strategy has finally bit them in the ass

What an excellent way for Google to hit the headlines, be seen as the good guys AND not have it cost them too much. Also good for advertisers, so I think all in all it’s a great move.
